Numerical investigation of a high-pressure gas medium preionization by runaway electrons

Abstract A comparative simulation of the generation and acceleration runaway electrons in discharge gap during initiation by nanosecond subnanosecond pulses is carried out. We used a numerical model based on PIC-MCC method. Calculations were out for N 2 6 atm pressure. Numerical formation process electron avalanche initiated an field-emitted from top cathode microspike was taking into account motion each avalanche. Characteristic trajectories, energy gained through gap, times required to reach anode calculated. compared our results with calculations using well-known differential equation braking force Bethe approximation. solved this also real (experimental) ionization cross section. The reasons discrepancy calculation are discussed.
